The 1896 directory listed Henry Goldberger, a tinner, as a boarder at 539 Acklin Avenue.  It was home to William Lawton, a bookkeeper with H. Schaefer & Company, in 1900.  The 1910 city directory listed this address as vacant.  The 1911 directory has Otto Schaefer as the resident.  Mr. Schaefer was the secretary and treasurer of the Schaefer Brokerage Company.  Frederick Smith, the president of Smith & Loetz Lumber Company lived here in 1918, while attorney Ralph Emery live here next according to the 1921 and 1924 city directories.  His wife was Edith Emery.
