Name Change Protest

In 1951 the Tigers sold the team.  Halfway through the 1952 season the team left for Charleston, West Viginia.  The Milwaukee Braves club was brought in to fill the gap and the Toledo club was renamed the Glass Sox.  Twelve-year old David Lea (left) of 2346 Lawrence and his neighbor and friend Sammy Sutton protested the idea of changing the name of Toledo's baseball team from the Mud Hens to Glass Sox.  This photo of the boys was snapped by a Blade photographer and appeared in the April 15, 1953 issue of the newspaper.   Photo courtesy of David Lea of the British West Indies.
