2709 Collingwood

Reputed gangster Gerald Hayes commissioned architect Harry Wachter to design this palatial home at 2709 Collingwood in 1926.  The contractor was Joseph Jackson & Son.  The house cost $25,382 to build and the garage cost $2,856.   "Jimmy" Hayes was mudered 10/4/34 in Detroit.  His second wife and then-widow Elenore (Kocher) Hayes remained in the house according to the 1935 city directory.  The 1939 directory indicated that John McMahon, the Hayes family lawyer, and his wife Ethel became the new owners.
